Despite a variety of support programs in the U.S., a multitude of people go to bed hungry every night. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau:
More than 45 million Americans live below the poverty line
More than 49 million Americans are at risk of hunger
Over 48 percent of households in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) are working households.
Two-thirds of SNAP recipients are children, elderly or disabled
Musicians Mission of Mercy targets distributions in communities with a high percentage of these populations, including children attending Title 1 schools and their families, the elderly on fixed incomes, disabled veterans and people who are mentally or physically challenged.
